PACKETVIDEO ACQUIRES TWONKYVISION GmbH: Adds NEW products to Accelerate growth of convergence market

PacketVideo bridges the media gap between mobile phones and the connected home with DLNA CERTIFIED™ Media Server

PacketVideo Corporation, a pioneer and continued innovator in multimedia software for mobile phones, is seeking to accelerate the convergence of mobile phones and consumer electronics with the acquisition of Berlin-based TwonkyVision GmbH and its line of software products including its DLNA CERTIFIED™ Media Server product, TwonkyMedia server.

Enabling New Multimedia User Experiences

According to the company, this acquisition strengthens PacketVideo’s multimedia technology leadership and further implements the company’s vision for how, when and where consumers can access media.

“The talented TwonkyVision team has years of experience in the convergence space, and provides well-engineered software products that have been embraced by both progressive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and sophisticated media consumers,” said James. C. Brailean, Ph.D., president and CEO of PacketVideo Corporation. “Working with the world’s leading device OEMs and service providers, PacketVideo intends to take this technology to the mass market while providing the customers with PacketVideo’s premier level of worldwide engineering support and integration services.”

“As a result of their leadership in mobile devices, PacketVideo has become one of the top embedded multimedia software companies in the world, which is why this union makes so much sense,” said Angela Scheller, Ph.D., chief executive officer of TwonkyVision and the new managing director of PacketVideo’s German operations. “Consumers do not care about industry boundaries. They just want to enjoy their media. We understand that and will deliver quality software products that make that possible.”

PacketVideo will continue to support TwonkyVision’s highly regarded product line for embedded devices like network attached storage, set-top-boxes & personal video recorders as well as their PC product line. All of these products will greatly benefit from PacketVideo’s deep expertise in the areas of system integration, protocols, and multimedia codecs.

TwonkyVision’s Expertise in Interoperability for CE Devices

TwonkyVision was founded in 2000 as a spin-off of the world-renowned Fraunhofer FOKUS Institute for Open Communications Systems (www.fokus.fraunhofer.de). The TwonkyVision team has been driving innovation in the connected media area since its inception and has developed proven, high-performance universal plug-and-play (UpnP) audio-video middleware. This includes a software development kit for embedded devices as well as UPnP media server software – known as TwonkyMedia – that supports a broad range of platforms and media players, including the Sony PSP and the Microsoft Xbox 360.

PacketVideo’s Expertise in Interoperability and Standards for Mobile Devices

PacketVideo, founded in 1998, creates custom multimedia software solutions for mobile operators, mobile device manufacturers and related development partners. PacketVideo counts the top 10 mobile phone manufacturers among its customers and has more than 130 handsets deployed over the world’s largest mobile phone networks.

TwonkyVision’s headquarters in Berlin will become PacketVideo Germany, and will expand PacketVideo’s presence in Europe along with offices in Tampere, Finland and Nice, France. PacketVideo is headquartered in San Diego, California, and also has offices in Chicago, Illinois, Charlotte, North Carolina and Tokyo, Japan.
