PACKETVIDEO'S CORE™ MULTIMEDIA FRAMEWORK NAMED EXCLUSIVE PLAYER FOR VMEDIA MOBILE HANDSETS AT LAUNCH
Tiny Optical Format Makes Big Screen Movies Mobile
BARCELONA – Mobile World Congress, Stand 1C09 (Feb. 11, 2008) – PacketVideo’s (PV) CORE software has been named by Vmedia Research as the exclusive media player for handsets supporting its new tiny optical disc format, introduced here this week.
PV’s CORE multimedia framework is the embedded multimedia engine that powers more than 200 million devices worldwide. Supporting playback of quality, high-speed (30 frames per second) Vmedia content is its newest feature.
Vmedia is an innovative miniature optical disc format bringing the quality of a big screen experience and the simplicity of home entertainment to mobile consumer electronics. The Vmedia format makes its debut in June of 2008 with the introduction of a Vmedia enabled phone from Spice Mobile™, a youth-oriented mobile carrier covering major Indian and Southeast Asia markets.
“The Vmedia format expands quality mobile entertainment in a convenient packaged media to geographic markets that have an immediate demand for alternatives to broadcast services,” said PV CEO James C. Brailean, Ph.D. “The removable media format is the ultimate in time- and place-shifted video viewing.”
“Vmedia chose PV’s CORE multimedia framework because it’s the multimedia engine that has the most extensive deployment in the mobile industry, and as a new format, we needed to launch with a solid, proven solution,” said Steve Volk, CEO and founder of Vmedia Research. “We want the user experience with Vmedia to match or exceed the home viewing experience, and the CORE framework supports Vmedia’s high resolution, high-bit rate video.”
As a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance, PV also provides multimedia sub-system for the Android handset platform that provides all the fundamental software necessary to launch media services. This media sub-system is called OpenCORE™.
PV,a subsidiary of NextWave Wireless (NASDAQ: WAVE), has a long history in mobile video, including having the distinction of being the first company to bring video to a mobile phone nearly 10 years ago.
